The Original Six Red Wings

The Red Wings have been playing hockey in Detroit since 1927. They're part of the Original Six teams that helped to create the National Hockey League (NHL). My granddad, dad, and I have been watching the same team for nearly sixty years now. It's something we can all participate in, although sometimes I think we're secretly waiting for someone to throw down their gloves and start a fight.
My granddad still favors the legendary Gordie Howe as his favorite player. Although "Mr. Hockey" played in every decade from the 1940s to the 1980s, I never saw him play. My dad loves Steve Yzerman, who was drafted in 1983. He helped lead the Red Wings to their current greatness.
For me, I could never pick just one favorite player. My favorites were the "Russian Five" from the Red Wings' 1990s teams. The "Russian Five" was made up of Igor Larionov, Sergei Fedorov, Vladimir Konstantinov, Vyacheslav Fetisov, and Vyacheslav Kozlov. They were instrumental to the Red Wings' success in the 1990s. In the 1997 playoffs, the Red Wings were 16-0 when the "Russian Five" scored a point but only 0-4 if they didn't.
The Red Wings have made the playoffs in the last 19 years. It's a remarkable string of success that my entire family can enjoy when we get together and watch them on Special Direct TV deals.
