The Bronz zoo all over again
Way back in the 70’s, Yankee owner George Steinbrenner was always close and up front with his team, getting involved in things that he shouldn’t. At one point, the Yankees offense wasn’t producing so he promptly fired the pitching coach.
These days, Hank Steinbrenner is making his presence felt. This past week he criticized the team’s offense, saying that they need to start hitting. That’s a no-brainer considering the Yanks are 12th in the AL with runners in scoring position. Despite scoring 18 runs against the Rangers the other night, players like Johnny Damon are well aware of the offensive drought. "Hank is right, Damon said. You can't hide from what our offense is doing. It's there. It's in the box score. I know what wins ballgames, driving in runs and scoring runs. Batting average doesn't mean anything."
The Yankees offense was stymied again last night as John Lester and the Boston Red Sox won the opener of a four game series 7-0. The loss dropped the bombers to 45-41 on the year, 8 games behind the first place Tampa Bay devil Rays. That’s right. I said the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. There is some good news for the Yanks. If they were in the National league West, they would be in first place.
Hank is saying that the team has too many distractions. He also made a comment referring to Jason Giambi growing a mustache, saying that he and the rest of the team need to grow something else. There have even been rumors that A-Rod has been hanging around with Madonna, which might explain why his offensive numbers are down from last year. It has also been reported that his wife Cynthia ran off to Paris with rocker Lenny Kravitz. No distractions there.

Yankee fans may be wishing for the days when Joe Torre was around. He is off in tinsel town leading the resurging Dodgers, who are only a game and a half behind Arizona in the weak NL West. I am sure if Torre was still the manager, A-Rod wouldn’t have gotten involved with Madonna. Maybe somebody like Trisha Yearwood? I hear Shania Twain is available. I digress. This kind of news belongs in the National Enquirer. I’ll save this juicy information for my celebrity gossip blog.
Manager Joe Girardi is trying desperately to make things work. He is having a hard time at managing. He got the shaft when he managed the Florida Marlins, now he is getting heat as the Yankees skipper. He looks stressed out these days. It looks like he aged 10 years. I guess managing in New York has a way of doing that. They are getting some decent production out of Bobby Abreu. Every time I turn on the game, he seems to get a hit. Jason Giambi has been getting hot, despite his 1970’s adult film star mustache. I can’t help but think of that corny music in those old adult flicks. (Not that I ever watched those films, I just heard about them) The public address guy at the Stadium should play that whenever Giambi comes to bat. Speaking of the 70’s, the Yanks seem to be re-enacting those episodes of the teams from that era. Only this time, there are different faces .Tune in again next week to watch the drama unfold in Yankee land. Oh yeah, the All star game is July 15th at the Stadium, maybe by then we can turn our attention to baseball.
