Sexon pile drives Rangers pitcher in 5-0 loss
In these days of the high paid high profile players, there are always those fans that will claim that the players don't care about the game that they only care about the money. There may be some players that carry that attitude, but for the most part,it does take alot of talent to make it into the big leagues,so when a pitcher starts to throw some "Chin Music",that's when it is time to take a stand. And that's exactly what the Seattle Mariner's Richie Sexson did.It all started when Seattle pitcher Felix Henandez plunked Texas catcher Gerald Laird in the second inning, and then Ian Kinsler, after hitting a two run homer, was hit in the 4th inning.
Things were really starting to heat up when Sexson came to bat expecting to be thrown at,after all it is a part of the game. The first pitch was high, yet over the plate, but the 6-foot-8 Sexson lost his temper, took off his helmet and threw it at the pitchers back and wrestled him to the ground.Needless to say both benches emptied and Sexson was the only one ejected.
Later on,Sexon had commented that he shouldn't have thrown his helmet. He knew that was wrong. But maybe the high emotions were a result of missing Wednesday's game to take his child to the hospital. The Mariners have also been struggling at the plate lately.
The benches clearing brawls are a part of the game. When a pitcher gets any where near a players head, that's when it can become ugly.
This past spring, theYankees and Devil Rays erupted when the Yankees Shelly Duncan slid feet first into 2nd base, spiking the 2nd baseman. It isn't often that you see the benches empty in spring training.I'm not encouraging brawls to happen, but aside from the fact that players don't want their careers ended abruptly due to a 100 mph fast ball in the head,it does bring out the fire of competition in players.Rangers pitcher Eddie Guardado was quoted in saying:"It was probably good for both teams. It got the heart pounding and the blood flowing, and you saw some good baseball after that"
It is like the old saying,I went to a wrestling match and a baseball game broke out!
