John Odom traded for 10 bats
The Calgary Vipers of the Golden Baseball League traded John Odom to the Laredo Broncos of the United League for 10 Prairie Sticks Maple Bats, double-dipped black, 34-inch, C243 style. The Canadian team signed the right handed pitcher about a month ago but couldn't get him into the country because of a criminal record, which turned out to be a minor incident when he was 17 years old.Apparently he was involved in a fight that he thought had been expunged from his record but popped up during immigration.
According to the Prairie Sticks Web site, their maple bats retail for $69 each, discounted to $65.50 for purchases of six to 11 bats. What a deal!
This isn't the first time Calgary made a strange trade. The Vipers once tried to acquire a pitcher for 1,500 blue seats when they were renovating their stadium.
Odom hails from Atlanta and was drafted late by the San Francisco Giants in 2003.He did pitch 38 games in class A from 2004-2006 but was released from the orginization this spring.
When asked about the trade,Odom said "I don't really care,It'll make a better story if I make it to the big leagues."
There was no mention as to whether John Odom is any relation to Blue Moon Odom, who pitched for the A's way back in the seventies
Maybe Mets GM Omar Minaya can keep his eyes and ears open for a similar deal.
