Manuel looks to stay on top in East
The Philadelphia Phillies find themselves in first place of the National league East.
Last year, the Phils played 160 games before they ended up in first place. They won the division on the last day of the season, the teams first division title since 1993.
And manager Charlie Manuel isn’t taking anything for granted. He can be brutally honest with his players and has told them he has no problems getting his points across no matter who the player is. But always behind closed doors. And 2007 NL MVP Jimmy Rollins is no exception. With two outs in a scoreless tie and Carlos Ruiz on second base in the third inning, Rollins was the batter. He lofted a routine popup to shortstop. The ball hit off the heel of Paul Janish's glove, caroming to short left field. Ruiz easily scored. Rollins, sensing the easy out, didn't run toward first. He did eventually make it to the base, but had he been running would have easily been on second base. When the fifth inning rolled around, Manuel replaced Rollins at shortstop with Eric Bruntlett.
"Jimmy and I took care of that," was all Manuel would say at his post game press conference. "It's done. I don't have to talk about it." Rollins owned up to his lazy base running. "When a player isn't hustling, he [Manuel] has to take the initiative," Rollins said before boarding a bus for the road trip. "He has two rules: be on time and hustle. I broke one of them. I should know better." This kind of attitude and respect for the manager is what just might keep Philadelphia on top in the East.
A little draft news: The Tampa Bay Devil Rays got the first round draft pick. They went with Tim Beckham, a talented high school shortstop from Griffin, Ga.
Beckham, 18, graduated on Saturday from Griffin High School. He was ranked as the number one high school prospect in the country by Baseball America Beckham, who hits right handed, batted .482 (53-for-110) with six home runs, 13 doubles, 41 RBIs, 58 runs scored and 23 steals in his senior season, leading Griffin to the Region 4-AAAA championship and to its first state championship series since 1981.
The D-Rays had two first round picks in 1999 and again in 2003.They picked high school outfielders in Josh Hamilton and Delmon Young, both are in the big Leagues .Hamilton is the leader in RBI’s this year with 68.
Barry Bonds is going to trial for lying about his use of performance-enhancing drugs in testimony given to a grand jury nearly five years ago. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston set a date of March 2, 2009.
