The Mets Woes Continue
Here we go again.Whenever there is a problem with the way a team is playing, they always look to the manager.Maybe that is part of the job to take the hit when the team is struggling.
Mets manager Willie Randolph has been frustrated about the way his team has been playing and somehow said a few things to a New Jersey reporter that mentioned racial issues and it opened up a whole can of worms in which Randolph issued an apology right way.In the statement he said,"I take full responsibility for what I said out of frustration, and hope that we can put closure to this matter and focus on winning some baseball games. That's what we're here to do, win a championship, win some games."
But the Mets haven't been doing that. They just got smoked tonight by the Braves,11-4 to put them at an even 22-22 on the year.Thats not going to look good for Wille.Mets management wasn't too thrilled with his comments in the first place, and lets get real.Wille Randolph is a smart guy.He knew what he said,he knew what he did.And he knows how to go about trying to fix it.But it seems that in this world, whenever you make any mention to some of the things Randolph did, there is no going back. There has been tension in the Mets clubhouse. This past Friday, closer Billy Wagner made some remarks about certain guys not stepping up.He nodded towards Carlos Delgado's locker. And according to Wagner,it got all twisted around,he didn't mean it that way,and he immediately made an apology to Delgado.
Whether he meant it or not,in a way it is right on the money. There's lots of guys on that club right now that are struggling, for whatever reason, injuries, slumps,it happens in baseball. But as far as Delgado is concerned, his best years may have been left in Toronto. The only guy really playing well this year is Ryan Church, everyone else seems to be struggling.
The problem may lie with Omar Minaya. There is talk that Minaya has some of his "people" in the clubhouse, talking with the players, and just being around watching over things, isnt good for the manager.Maybe there were lots of Mets fans that were excited when the first base job was filled when Omar got Delgado.Tom Glavine was another deal, along with a young David Wright and a young Jose Reyes,Mets fans were probably more hopeful than excited. There really isn't any one to get excited about on this club.Omar Minaya always seemed to come accross a little grandiose.
Afterall,Minaya is a little like Ricardo Montalban in Fantasy Island.Claiming how wonderful it is to realize your dreams until the reality sets in and you realize that you dont have what you thought you did.
The Mets haven't improved on the field, while off the field things aren't any better.
Fans in Met land may be having flash backs of Art Howe and Roberto Alomar, and Mo Vaughn.Or maybe it's just the curse of their new stadium.Either way,it's going to be a long.cruel summer.
