Have the Rockies lost their mind?

December 1st 2010 13:02

It was reported that the Colorado Rockies and Troy Tulowitzki have agreed on a contract extenison through 2020.

Troy is a great player my only problem with this is the money.

He is a quick glance at what the contract looks like.

Tulowitzki will play out the final three years and $23.75 million of his current deal. He'll receive $16 million in 2014, as the club picks up his $15 million option and adds $1 million. The deal calls for $20 million salaries in 2015 through 2019, a $14 million salary in 2020 and a club option for 2021 at either $14 million or a $2 million buyout.

Why do teams committ so much money to one player?

I will never understand this at all. All ball clubs have done this one time or another i just don't understand it.

I don;t know maybe you guys can help me with this one. You have him signed until 2013 why pull the trigger now? why for so long? I don't care no player is worth 20 million a year.

This is a great deal. Tulo will produce in that ballpark and is the league's best shortstop. 15.7 million dollars a year is cheap for a young, talented player that you can build around. I am all for this deal.

No denying Tulo's ability and his worth i just have a problem commiting that much money.

You had him signed till 2013 why not extended it to 2015 or 2016 then look at a longer contract later.

I know alot has to do with what the player wants and yes he will only be 35 when deal is up but i just can't see signing any player for 10 years.

I understand where you're coming from. I would say the same thing if Tulo wasn't as young as he is. This is no A-Rod deal. Besides, this is the face of their franchise. This is the Rockies' version of Derek Jeter. He isn't such a legendary figure because the team isn't legendary, but gosh is he important to their success. If this was a pitcher, I would criticize it because God knows who gets injured seriously.
