Zambrano pitches in as Cubs win eighth in a row (LINK)
So far this season, the Chicago Cubs have been giving us baseball fans something to talk about. They are the main topic of discussion again after they won their eighth straight game, this time led by Carlos Zambrano who pitched in with three hits, including a game tying triple as the Cubs beat the Padres 7-6, to open their West Coast trip.Zambrano was given the ball despite his last outing in which he threw 130 pitches against the Dodgers.
Manager Lou Pinella wanted a short outing, and was ready to use his bull pen as Zambrano left after throwing 95 pitches while improving his record to 8-1.He gave up three runs, five hits and four walks while striking out two, with an ERA of 2.51. He's also batting .366.Chicago also got support from the rejuvenated Jim Edmonds, who had a pair of RBI doubles, Ryan Theriot had three hits, including an RBI single, and Kosuke Fukudome scored twice and drove in a run. The Cubbies now have a record of 37-21 which leads the Major Leagues. I am sure that gives Lou Pinellas a little more peace of mind.
Now we turn our attention over to Yankee-land, where Joba Chamberlain is set to make a start tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays. And it is about time.We have been hearing about him making a start since December. Let’s get it out of the way and over with already. I guess that is all the Yanks really have to talk about this year. We aren’t going to talk about Jason Giambi and his gold thong.
Now we turn our attention to the Mets. There’s really nothing to talk about. They did get shell-shocked by the San Francisco Giants 10-2 last night. After a few minutes of watching the 25-33 Giants manhandle my favorite team, I thought that I might have made better use of my time by watching “The new adventures of the old Christine”
But tonight, The Mets will look to improve the Giants record as they look for “The new adventures of Pedro Martinez”. Met fans are hopeful that tonight’s episode will have a happy ending as Martinez makes his first start since hurting himself the 2nd day of the season. It seems as though he has been on the DL his whole career with The Mets. Worst case scenario? Tonight’s show turns out to be “The same old adventures of Pedro Martinez.”
The Mets have two more games against the Giants before going to San Diego for the weekend to play the Padres. Then they come back to New York for a six game home stand, with a day off on Monday. Then the National League West leading Arizona Diamondbacks slither into Shea for three games followed by the Texas Rangers three game weekend series.
They then head back out to the West Coast to play a three game series against the Angels, and then they play the Rockies in Colorado. That really doesn’t make any sense. It used to be they would head out west to play the Dodgers, Padres, and Giants on one trip. I don’t know why they just can’t make it a 12 game road trip by adding Colorado to the mix. It seems as though it would make more sense then flying back and forth during the year.
The Mets do have 12 home games this month, so you have twelve chances to see Shea Stadium for the very last time. Follow the link to New York Mets Tickets and support the team! I’ll see you there!
