Breaking down the NL Central

March 29th 2011 12:10

The NL Central will be a crazy division this year. I see four teams with a shot at winning the division. The only certain thing is Pittsburgh will not win and will finish last once again. Houston is a team that could easily be second or fifth. Milwaukee will start the season without one of their top pitchers but when Greinke gets back look for them to have a say so in who wins the division. Cincinnati is the defending champs and have the team to do it again but i seem them faltering near the end and will finish third in the standings. Chicago added Matt Garza this offseason but still have lots of questions in the pitching and hitting department. Look for a fourth place finish for the Cubs. St. Louis enters the year with the knowledge that Adam Wainwright will not pitch so after Carpenter the rotation is shaky but the offense is their and look for Pulojs to have a banner year.

Final Standings

1. St Louis
2. Milwaukkee -4
3. Cincinnati -5
4. Chicago -7
5. Houston -11
6 Pittsburgh -18

The key to this division is how their pitching rotation holds up.

Here are the pitching rotations entering opening day:

Cincinnati = B. Arroyo, E. Volquez, T. Wood, M. Leake, S. Lecure
St. Louis = C. Carpenter, J. Westbrook, J. Garcia, K. Lohse, K. McClellan
Milwaukee = Y. Gallardo, S. Marcum, R. Wolf, C. Narveson, M Estrada
Houston = B. Myers, W. Rodriquez, J. Happ, B. Norris, N. Figueroa
Chicago = R. Dempster, C. Zambrano, M. Garza, R. Wells, A. Cashner
Pittsburgh = K. Correia, P. Maholm, R. Ohlendorf, C. Morton, J. McDonald

With these pitching rotations the offense will have to help when we reach the back end of the rotation. Do Not be surprised if you see alot of teams go to a four man rotation.

With Wainwrigh, I see this being a division race between the Brewers and the Reds. It will be close, and I think Fielder goes off and proves the difference between these two teams that will be separated by a mere game.

For 18 years the only certain thing in the National League is that the Pirates won't win. I almost wish the Onion.com story were true: "PNC Park threatens to move unless team is upgraded."

Pittsburgh is always an easy pick not to win this division.

I still think St. Louis has enough to win the division this year. Milwaukee will make it a close battle.
