A Look Back: 1977 MLB Season Part 1

The 1977 MLB season started with two new teams in the American League. The Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays started play. On April 6 there were two games to kick off the season. The California Angles defeated the Seattle Mariners 7-0 behind Frank Tanana's complete game masterpiece. The offense was provided by Joe Rudi who was 3-4 with 4rbi's. Rudi had a double and a homerun on the day.
The second game saw the Cincinnati Reds defeat San Diego 5-3 behind Ken Griffey and Cesar Geronimo. Griffey went 3-4 with a double while Geronimo was 1-4 with 2rbis. His hit was a homerun.
All teams would begin play over the next couple of days. The standings at the end of the first month were as follows:

Milwaukee 11-6
New York 11-9
Baltimore 9-8
Boston 9-9
Toronto 10-11
Detroit 8-12
Cleveland 6-11
AL West:
Minnesota 13-9
Oakland 12-9
Kansas City 11-8
Texas 10-8

California 9-13
Seattle 8-16
NL East:
St. Louis 12-7
Pittsburgh 10-7
Montreal 8-8
New York 8-9
Chicago 7-9
Philadelphia 7-9
NL West:
Los Angeles 17-3
Cincinnati 9-10
Houston 9-11
San Francisco 8-11
Atlanta 8-12
San Diego 8-15
Rick Rhoden had just won his fourth game of the season on April 30th to help the Dodgers get to 17 wins easily the best mark from any team.
